MACEDONIA – Signage at the downsized Burlington store and two oversized residential accessory structures were approved by the city’s planning committee at a short meeting April 18.

Burlington reduced the overall size of its proposed front wall sign from 382 square feet to 250 square feet for the reconfigured 125-foot wide space at Macedonia Plaza on East Aurora Road, which puts it in compliance with city standards.

City planner Brian Frantz said although the building is not part of Macedonia Commons, it has historically followed the approved Commons sign standards since it is in the Town Center District.

The larger “Burlington” and the small tagline reading “Ladies, mens, kids, baby, home, coats” underneath will measure 33 feet, 10 inches wide by 7 feet, 4 inches tall.

Although the proposed heart-shaped B and the letter L in the sign are 88.6 inches tall, which exceeds the maximum of 72 inches, the planning panel found that to be an “incidental item” and not a problem.

The sign will have flush-mounted LED channel, front-lit letters. The commission approved the sign subject to the side returns and trim cap being bronze rather than the originally proposed black, with the face colors being red and black.

A Burlington panel also will be permitted on the monument sign along East Aurora Road. It will be the top panel of six, will measure 8 feet, 2 inches wide by 1 foot, 10 inches tall, and will be white on a red background.

Meanwhile, the first oversized accessory structure that was approved is a 740-square-foot (20 by 37 foot), two-story, 22.4-foot high detached garage at 10055 Valley View Road.

The zoning code allows such buildings to be 600 square feet and 15 feet high in the R-1 residential zoning district. A previous detached garage at the residence burned down in December 2021. The lot measures 1.15 acre.

Frantz said the height and the fact that the building would be two stories high requires that the board of zoning appeals must grant variances, and the planning panel’s approval is conditioned on that.

The second oversized accessory structure that was approved is a 1,008-square-foot (24 by 42 feet), 15-foot high detached garage in the rear yard at 8633 Melody Lane. It is in addition to an existing 160-square-foot shed on the 2.83-acre, R-1-zoned lot.
