The first 20 "Hometown Hero" banners have been placed in downtown Troy.

TROY — The Troy/Maryville/St. Jacob/Marine Chamber of Commerce and the City of Troy have installed the first 20 "Hometown Hero" banners in downtown Troy.

“This banner project has taken a bit longer that we initially thought, but we believe the wait will be worth it,” said Dawn Mushill, executive director, of the Troy/Maryville/St. Jacob/Marine Chamber of Commerce. “When we opened the box of printed banners, we all got chills. So many deserving people have been nominated."

The Hometown Hero banner idea was initiated by Troy city employee Don Kramlich, who suggested to the chamber that a program be created to honor local heroes. Kramlich, who worked 20 years for Troy, died in 2021. A banner was created in his honor.

Patti Daniel also assisted in moving the project forward, suggesting the idea to Troy Mayor David Nonn. She was the first to purchase a banner in honor of her husband; it is displayed at the Troy City Hall.

The banners represent a variety of Troy heroes, including military, first responders, educators, government officials, public servants, volunteers and business owners. Families and friends nominated the individuals to be featured on the banners in downtown Troy. City officials installed the banners starting at the four-way stop at Main and Market and stretching down all four streets.

To nominate someone for the next round of banners in the spring of 2023, contact the Troy/Maryville/St. Jacob/Marine Chamber of Commerce at 618-667-8769 by Dec. 31, 2022.
